Record breaking year continues to soar
Wyoming Transit Service Celebrates 100,000th Customer
WARSAW, NY – The Rochester Genesee Regional Transportation Authority announced today at a press conference that Wyoming Transit Service surpassed 100,000 customers heading towards a record breaking year. RGRTA Commissioner Frank Vitagliano and RGRTA Chief Executive Officer Mark Aesch presented Jennifer Bradley with the new WYTS Value Pass.
“Today is an exciting day for WYTS and Wyoming County. WYTS has seen a steady increase in ridership since service began in 1993. This year alone we saw an 18% increase in ridership over 2005,” said Mark Aesch, Chief Executive Officer of RGRTA “People need to get to jobs, to medical appointments and to shopping centers every day. Demand for public transportation in Wyoming County has far exceeded our expectations and continues to grow".
Due to the efforts of Congressman Thomas Reynolds, New York State Senator Dale Volker, New York State Assemblyman Dan Burling and the Wyoming County Board of Supervisors, residents of Wyoming County have affordable, safe and reliable transportation.
"Providing access to public transportation has become critical for our citizens and businesses," stated Congressman Thomas M. Reynolds (R-Clarence). "Our citizens rely on public transportation to take them to their jobs and do their shopping. Small businesses rely on public transportation to get their employees to work and get customers to their shops. Today's announcement is further evidence that public transportation is critical to our economy and to providing an invaluable service to the residents of Wyoming County."
Over the course of 13 years, WTYS has provided safe, affordable, and reliable transportation to residents of Wyoming County. In 2006 WYTS has provided transportation to 100,000 customers at the cost of only $20,120 to Wyoming County. The economic benefit to the county and its residents has been $980,000 invested in the local economy, the creation of 21 permanent jobs.
At the end of the day, Wyoming County has enjoyed a net gain of $960,000 and has a public transportation system that is customer focused, fiscally responsible and technologically innovative.
The increase in discretionary ridership has been influenced by the significant increase in gas prices in Wyoming County. “Families and seniors with budgets already strained because of increases in utility costs and health insurance costs have made an economic choice to use WYTS and save money,” said Aesch.
"Accessible public transportation is playing an increasingly important role in our economy and in the quality of life offered to our citizens” said New York State Assemblyman Daniel J. Burling. “In rural Wyoming County, public transportation is vital to those residents who do not have ready access to or resources for private transportation. Public transportation has helped people find and hold jobs and provided the opportunities to access needed services for many of our areas senior citizens and families."
Wyoming County Board of Supervisors joined in the celebration and presented Ms. Bradley with a Wyoming County insignia pin and pen. “Jennifer Bradley is but one of many hard working moms and dads who rely on public transportation to get to work everyday. When employers know that their employees have reliable, affordable transportation they see a stable community,” said Wyoming County Board of Supervisors Chairman A.D. Berwanger. “Public transportation plays an important role in our economy and in the quality of life offered by our area. Access to public transportation is helping people to find and hold jobs. The availability of public transportation is important to businesses looking to locate in our area.”
